Week 6 Lines

I want you to imagine for a second that  a team is driving to the
winning TD and a QB drops back and throws a crippling pick six which
ices the game. Also imagine a team going and trailing the whole game
and keeping it close enough for it’s fans to keep watching until there
is no more time left for any comebacks.

Yep, for one Sunday remnants of previous Giants and Jets regimes
popped up and reminded both fan bases of what used to be. While it’s
unclear whether this past Sunday is who both teams are, one playing
down to competition and one not as good as we thought.

But like I wrote in my postgame comments, I’m not concernedqd with the
Jets. Their line has had injuries and free agency forced them to rid
themselves of several key cogs of their defense but Rex Ryan’s defe-
f ense has never been about the players but more about the scheme.
They have never had a prototypical pass rusher but they have survived
and done well. The whole point is that the offense doesn’t know where
the pressure is coming from. Expect from Monday Night’s game against
the Dolphins on, that the Jets go back to running the football and
playing keep away with the defense. This Dolphin game couldn’t come at
a better time.

As for the Giants, the key is in perception. For some reason the
Giants revel in their underdog status. They enjoy it and love playing
it up as a rallying cry. It fuels them. Two come from behind wins
aren’t enough but when they are favored by such a substantial amount
its important to know that the Giants DO NOT feel comfortable and
would rather lose and have you underestimate them than win and prove
your confidence correct.

Ok so that was just fan speak for how frustrated I am about the Giants
but alls well that ends well right?  But I don’t think the Giants are
comfortable being the big bully. They would rather be the team that no
one saw coming. I don’t know how I feel about it, but it’s clear
that’s who they are.

Now to the lines:

PACKERS (-14) over Rams-  seriously?  This line can’t be high enough.

Jags (+12.5) over STEELERS-  either the Steelers are back or the
rumors that they have aged are true.  Judging by my pick you can see
where I stand on that. Steelers of two years ago I would have said
their defense alone could give them a two touchdown advantage.

Eagles (-3) over REDSKINS-  Eagles have done nothing to shake the
scary feeling that this dream team is more like a nightmare but I
don’t trust Rex Grossman. I love the Washington defense and running
game. Let’s see who shows up for the Eagles.

LIONS (-4) over 49ers-  I was legitimately afraid of that Detroit
crowd on Monday night. Tell me, when you saw Barry Sanders show his
face in Detroit that you didn’t hear a voice in the distance
whispering “if you build it, he will come”. Barry Sanders=Shoeless Joe

Panthers (+3.5) over FALCONS- Vegas needs to get off the Falcon
bandwagon and need to fully support the Cam bandwagon.  By the way,
how gangster was it to see Steve Smith catch that touchdown by
throwing the Saints defender off him, get a cheap shot from Roman
Harper, do his TD celebration, then drag Harper by the helmet with one
hand and just tell him really awful things you couldn’t air on HBO.
Yeah. Remember how there was a convo about who was the better Steve
Smith?  Yeah, let’s end that shall we?

BENGALS (-6) over Colts-  should I be worried that I’m using the
following sentence: yeah, but they are facing Curtis Painter. I should
get my head checked right?

Bills (+3) over GIANTS

RAVENS (-7) over Texans-  tough break for the texans losing Mario
Williams for the year. Let’s see uncle Wade do it sans his DeMarcus
Ware type player.

RAIDERS (-6) over Browns-  Al Davis is leading this team to some
bizarre wins. A fitting tribute.

PATRIOTS (-6.5) over Cowboys- I’m actually looking forward to this
game. High scoring affair for sure.

Saints (-6.5) over BUCS- Drew Brees fantasy monster.

BEARS (-2.5) over Vikings- First boring match up of that Sunday night line up.

JETS (-6.5) over Dolphins.

Enjoy week 6 folks

WEEK 6 NFL Picks

Week 6 and the personal rallying cry is to get to .500.  Nothing would make me happier, and these days it doesn’t take much to make me happy.

Chargers (-9) over RAMS-  I’ve been on the Sam Bradford bandwagon since day one.  I’ve always loved Steve Spagnuolo for what he did with the Giants defense over the span of two years that led to one number one seed and an unforgettable Super Bowl title year.   This is a perfect test for this football team.  I just think the Chargers have too much offense.  With Marcus McNiel coming back their offense can only benefit.

Chiefs (+4.5) over TEXANS-  I’m just not buying these Texans and last week’s Colts showing told me a lot about the Chiefs.  If there’s one week where Matt Cassel’s arm has to show up its this week.  The Texans can be abused on the secondary.  What is it about tight ends named Tony in Kansas City?

Ravens (+2.5) over PATRIOTS- The Randy Moss didn’t make sense for one specific reason: they don’t have someone who you would say unequivocally is ready to step in that role.  Then you realize that the Patriots are going back to the short passing game, throw 4 or 5 deep shots per game that worked for them when they were winning Super Bowls.  I’m still pissed that teams aren’t taking advantage of the fact that there’s no Ed Reed back there.  HELP! It feels like I’m taking crazy pills.  Someone throw the freaking ball on this team.  Wait, should I change my pick?  Ahh, forget it.  Ravens run all over the Pats-ies.

Saints (-4.5) over BUCS- This is everyone and their mother’s “upset special of the week.”. The more people that pick the Bucs, the more I feel like the upset would actually be the Saints beating the Bucs.  This is where the Saints regain their mojo.

Falcons (+2) over EAGLES-  The best quote this week: michael Vick giving his self diagnosis: “I don’t need no practice.  Last week I couldn’t comb my hair.  This week I can.” I mean with brilliant self analysis like that how can you go wrong?  The Iggles lack of size is an issue.  The NFL is growing in every way and the Iggles love speed, and they sacrifice the bulking hulk they need to push people around at the line of scrimmage.  Stewart Bradley has been playing less than stellar, which means he’s playing injured and he’s playing through it so people won’t get the idea that he’s injury prone.  The Falcons meanwhile continue to impress and lead me to believe that the NFC South will have another champion.  Not worst to first, but the Falcons are certainly showing that they can maintain in a wide open NFC versus top AFC competition like the Steelers.

Lions (+10) over GIANTS-  The Lions are no push over.  This can’t even be considered a trap game.  The Lions can easily be walking into this show down 4-1 losing tough at Chicago week one, and hanging in tough with Philly and Green Bay and blowing out a team they knew they were better than- that is a sign of a team turning the corner.  I’m only giving this because I need to see this Giants defense do it more consistently, not because I don’t want to jinx the G-men.

BEARS (-6) over Seahawks-  Seattle has been making moves left and right with no rhyme or reason.  Pete Carroll is like that guy in your fantasy football league that offers trades every 5 minutes that are extremely lopsided hoping you press the accept button by accident.  Unfortunately he doesn’t realize that you have many sites with the “are you sure” option, which would be awesome in life.  Here are other times in life off the top of my head where that option would come in handy:

1.  Drunken hook up-  Beer goggles or not, most good nights begin because of bad decisions.  The end of the night begins with the first shot you do where you pick it up and look at it.  FREEZE: enter are you sure option.  You’ve been here plenty of times.  You know where this leads.  Look, there’s a fairly unnatractive girl eyeing you.  If you had the are you sure option, would you take that shot?  That drunk hook up does not need to happen.

2.  Lying to your parents/kids/significant other.  You are about to do something you know is bad.  You need a good excuse.  You are about to walk out the front door and bam, you get asked a simple question “what are you doing?”  Before you answer, its the final raft to bring you home.  That’s your conscience.  Would you still lie?  Ok, so 90% of you would and as for the remaining 10, grow a pair.  But this is your last opportunity to come clean so there isn’t too much fall out when the truth eventually comes to light.

I’m sure there are more, but Pete Carroll needs an are you sure option in life.

PACKERS (-3) over Dolphins-  what’s going on with this team?  Are the Mets medical staff working on the Packers?  Everyones going down with season ending injuries.   Aaron Rodgers is playing through a concussion.  I don’t care how he got cleared to play, he should have a week off, but desperation is kicking in.  They know they need this game.

STEELERS (-14) over Browns-  Big Bens return is not why I’m picking the Stillers.  Its because the defense returned since week 1 to where they should be, one of the leagues best.  The defense covers by itself.

Jets (-3.5) Over BRONCOS-  No Revis today (or atleast that’s the right move), but the fact is the Jets don’t need him.  Their offense is borderline great.  Emerging TE and QB with a strong running game and a defense that is Super Bowl ready.  It seems like its all going good for the Jets right now.  They’ve even had to overcome their biggest obstacle: media’s perception of the Jets.  So the storybook is already written.  Midseason strife with the arrest, opening season loss that challenged this group.  Oh yeah, get the tickets printed.

Raiders (+7) over 49ERS- How in the world could the niners be favored in this game?  Because they’ve been keeping it close?  Sorry.  If ever there was a time for pride to set in and help the Niners win, its this but I like the Raiders.  I think they are good and the feel good ‘tude emerging from Oakland because they finally knocked off the Chargers can carry.  It can carry a long way, and this week, it doesn’t have to carry that far.

VIKINGS (-1.5) over Cowboys-  The Vikings have lost because they’ve had a tough time putting together ONE more drive.  The Cowboys have had a tough time winning because they beat themselves.  I am going with the team that just needs one more drive than the team that beats itself.  Both of these teams’ fanbases are probably picking against their own team.  Funny how the NFL and fandom works.

Colts (-3) over REDSKINS-  For some reason I feel like the REdskins are ALWAYS at home which means the second half I’m going to be saying the opposite.  I hate the Redskins for obvious reasons and for this: it feels like they win ugly.  VERY ugly.  I don’t like them.  I love Peyton, bordering on man crush thanks to his SNL work, his commercials and his overall greatness.  Of course him losing to New England all those times made you feel bad for the guy, but he’s overcome all that and his reputation has NEVER took a dip thanks to an unflappable demeanor that tells you one thing:  he’s mastered the art of moving on.

Titans (-3) over JAGUARS-  Titans have the defense and the running.  The jags just have the running.  With the NFC South games you can’t underestimate the Jags, but Titans just have too much here in what should be a boring MNF game.

Enjoy folks
